5 Things to Reconsider (Consider) About Your (New) Job

Monday, August 25th, 2008

I have seen it time and time again.  My dad changing careers because of $50 a month, my friends switching jobs for a better pay and my old classmates telling me they demanded a higher salary or they consider quitting. Let’s face it. Money is an important part of our job and without it, we wouldn’t be grinding the 9-5.
Stop the “Show Me The Money” Attitude
Money, however is not what we really want. Money is what we need, and most people are surprised to find that we really don’t need that much of it. I recently decided to give up a 6-figure salary to go full time blogging. While it was a decision that will force Emma and I to cut back on some of the luxuries we enjoyed, we will also be much happier. We won’t be driving nice cars, living in a […]

Stop Worrying About Your Finances

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Ever since I decided to become a full time blogger, I’ve spent many hours worrying thinking about my finances.  It’s not that I believe Emma and I will starve one day, but what will happen when my income is cut to 25% of what it originally was?  How will I feel when the checks aren’t coming on a regular basis?
My gut instinct is telling me that it is not good for me because my worry intensifies when I spend more energy trying to analyze the situation.  So, I decided to write this post to help me organize my thoughts and also listen to everyone’s comments on what I should do.  Thanks in advance for your support and advices!
What Happens When I Start Worrying About My Finances
At the beginning, worrying about my financial situation was good.  The concern helped me decide whether going […]

Confessions of a Dollar Bill

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

The personal finance community totally ignores the importance of my contribution.  Without me, life would be so different since everyone would have to carry so many coins.  I have decided to contribute my story to the public.  I am a dollar bill.
I was once available everywhere.  You might know my other siblings instead of me depending on which country you were in, but my brothers and sisters were available in every country.  I was a critical part of the financial system.
Slowly, I became less and less important.  I think people call it inflation, which to me is such a useless phenomenon.  What society decided to do was give people raises and then make everything cost more.  No one cares about this because they are still able to afford similar things but why have inflation?  Who does inflation help?  I keep telling everyone to to stop buying things that go up […]

Personal Finance Reading Sunday Prepare for the Unexpected Edition

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

I just came back from a funeral of my fellow sales person’s husband, who died of a sudden heart attack. It was emotional and shocking for all of us because we were just playing volleyball with her husband in a company event not long ago. It was such a tragedy and I wish my co-worker the best in everything she does for years to come.
One thing she (and all of us) can take comfort is that her husband’s sudden death saved another person’s life. My company’s accountant’s husband felt pain in his chest recently, and despite the accountant’s suggestion to go see the doctor, the husband refused as he had to direct his crew in Beijing for the Olympics. What finally changed his mind was the incident that happened to the saleslady’s husband. My accountant went to the doctors with her spouse, and the doctor […]

Saying Yes to Up-Sell is Saying No to Being Frugal

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Emma and I went to a pretty fancy restaurant to celebrate my wife’s birthday.  After we sat down, our waitress pleasantly asked us “Would you like some wine tonight?”  We just experienced a form of up-sell.
What is Up-Sell
Up-sell is the act of suggesting a higher priced product or service to a customer who is about to purchase.  What we experienced at the restaurant is no different than the cashier at Starbucks asking us to buy a grande sized mocha instead of tall or at McDonald’s when the cashier asked whether we wanted a combo rather than just the sandwich.
What It Means for the Company
These forms of up-sell are very popular because it works.  While at the restaurant, almost everyone that she asked ordered wine.  If she didn’t ask on the other hand, I bet half of those people will forget to do so.
What It Mean for Customers Like Us
On many […]

Consistent Income or One Time Payment

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Is $1,000,000 up front or 100 payments of $10,000 a month a sweeter deal? This is a question I often ponder. On one hand, a million dollars up front is in theory a better deal because it allows us to make much more money if we invest it correctly. It is also the most flexible because it gives us the maximum choice. We can always put it in an investment that pays $10,000 a month and there’s even a good chance that we will get more than 100 payments of $10,000.
On the other hand however, having $10,000 a month is so comforting. Even though we can set it up to get $10,000 a month with the big one time payment by putting it in investments, not many people truly has the discipline to do so. Just imagine whether anyone will be able to keep […]

Being in Las Vegas and not Gamble

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

I’m in Las Vegas again and I just want to share with everyone that I’m not gambling!!!  I am pretty proud of myself since I’ve always one way or another played at least a few hands of blackjack while I was in Las Vegas in the past.  I think the difference this time was because I had a strong feeling that if I do this frequently enough, I will eventually lose money because the odds aren’t in my favor.
I now treat gambling the same way as going to the movies.  If I want to go, I will decide how much I want to spend on the event and just assume that the money is spent.  I will gamble for entertainment, not to hope that I will get rich.
How do you treat gambling?  Do you ever hope that you will become rich when you gamble on something?  What about lottery tickets?  How many of […]

Financial Cost of Being Careless

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

It was only yesterday when I was $5,000 richer.
With the market in such volatility, it was a great time to invest since I was in it for the long term.  So, I made my 2008 contribution of $5,000 into the Roth IRA a couple weeks ago.  It was such an easy process because I have an ETrade savings account and an ETrade Roth IRA account so it was done a couple of clicks later.  A few weeks go by, I log into my ETrade account and noticed that my account balance went down $5,000!
I searched around, and realized that there was a new transfer payment of $5,000 from my online bank account to my Roth IRA.  After more searching, I realized what has happened.  ETrade increased my Roth IRA balance by $5,000 but did not decrease my online savings account when I made the transfer originally, and only made the […]
