Wall Street may be left a little smaller after the dust from the credit crisis settles. But will its next incarnation be even more profitable?

HUD Secretary Highlights Faith-Based Contributions To Combat Homelessness

WASHINGTON – Faith-based organizations are making a huge difference in the Bush Administration’s efforts to reduce homelessness, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Steve Preston said today. Addressing the White House National Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Conference, Preston highlighted the Administration’s partnership with faith-based and community organizations and steps being taken to reduce chronic homelessness, especially among veterans.
“The Faith-Based and Community Initiative combines the strengths of the public and private sectors to make our social programs work better,” said Preston. “There is a vast, network of partnerships between HUD, local communities and nonprofit organizations around the country. These partnerships are incredibly effective in helping to reduce the number of persons who are calling the streets their home.”

Why your diamond ring could be a terrible investment

After spending a good chunk of change on my wife’s engagement ring a few years ago, I was a little bit annoyed to read this article about new diamond technology. Evidently, the diamond farming technology has improved to the point where experts can no longer tell the difference between a real and a lab grown.
Growing diamonds like crops
The natural process for creating a diamond requires a lot of pressure, heat and time. Scientists have been trying to duplicate and speed up this process and unitl recently they have been small and impure. But, over the past decade they have had pretty good success.
Researchers have perfected a process called chemical vapor deposition (CVD) which grows pure and comparable sized diamonds in a matter of months. They are so good in fact that the writer of the article went to a jeweler with one of the stones to get an unbiased assessment [...]

Free Photos at CVS Sunday Links

We got a $3 off photo enlargements coupon from CVS so we figured it would be nice to get a larger sized wedding photo of ours to put in our bedroom.  We used those Kodak photo kiosks in the store to pick the photo and the total turned out to be $0.00.  Yes, it was free so the coupon wasn’t even needed.
Of course, no one had any idea why but we are nonetheless very happy.  We will be sure to try again next time and hopefully we will still get lucky!  While we try to figure out which photos to enlarge, why not check out these great articles from around the blogsphere to enhance your personal finance knowledge?

S&P 500 Chart – June 27, 2008

Last week I charted the Dow Jones and said the break of the trend line was a bearish indicator.  The only hope would be that the $DJI didn’t stay below that line the following two days.  Instead, the $DJI edged lower and we ended up with a horrible Thursday well below that line.  I’ve made my point on the Dow’s direction, so today I turn to the S&P 500 ($SPX.X) to chart.
Starting with the good stuff, the January 23rd low was 1,270.05, the March 10th low was 1,272.66 and the low on Friday, June 27th was 1,272.00.  That’s a pretty solid floor, not counting the March 17th low of 1,256.98.
The uglier side of the story is with the trend lines and moving averages, the VIX and history.  For the past month and a half the lows have only gotten lower each time it bounces back down.  The 10, 20, 50, 100 AND [...]
